In excellent condition commensurate to age (50 years) and with no obvious damage except a scratch to the interior of drop-down cupboard (photo 3). Using traditional cabinet making techniques, this Chest Of Drawers is crafted from solid oak with solid teak used for the drawer interiors. The makers mark can be found on the interior of the top drawer. The format of this set are 4 drawers to the left in a graduated form which is also mirrored to the right. This piece is elevated from a standard mid century Chest by the wonderful detailing such as the bevelled edge around the drawer housing and the step detailing to the base of each drawer. The unit sits on a frame to the base with wonderful solid wood tapered legs. A truly timeless piece of furniture which will adorn any vintage or modern home wonderfully. These are highly sought after and very rare pieces. Some light marks expected of a used vintage item. 131cm L x 47cm D x 67cm H. Background of the maker. D Meredew is a company founded in 1879 by c cabinet maker Daniel Meredew from Shaftesbury Street, East End, London. Upon his retirement in 1907, Fredrick Hard acquired the business and retained the business name as it was renowned for making high quality furniture. In 1913, Meredew furniture manufacture was relocated to Letchworth as the new factory had its very own railway siding allowing timber to be brought directly to the factory from the docks. As the company expanded due to their high quality craftsmanship, further factories were opened in Bradford and Pontefract West Yorkshire. In 1956, Alphonse Loebenstein was brought to the company having an engineering and design background working with furniture makers in Germany, France and Italy. Alphonse was at the forefront of design encouraging Meredew to manufacture furniture to compete with rival company G PLAN but far exceed their build quality. Meredew specialised in producing bedroom furniture, however they did produce a range sideboards and dining sets and brought on further designers including Robert Heritage.
