This Is A Rare CC41 Fireside Caned Armchair Made Between 1941 and 1952. It has the official stamp on its front rail (see photograph). During the Second World War timber for furniture making was scarce, demand was high due to the losses of housing caused by bombing. The Governments board of trade, led by Hugh Dalton setup a committee in 1942 to manage the problem. The CC41 logo was used for utility furniture composed of capital letters Cs and the figure 41, for Controlled Commodity 1941 (which soon became known as The Two Cheeses). The committee produced a number of approved designs, published in the utility furniture catalogue of 1943. The aim was to ensure the production of strong well-designed furniture making the most efficient use of the scarce timber. The scheme was officially closed in 1952, the same year that furniture rationing ceased. Much of this type of Furniture was thrown away when people recovered from the wartime austerity making this piece a rare find. I have done some restorative work to the wood which included removing modern red varnish and refinishing with stain and French polish. I then replaced the Rattan Caned back using the traditional 7 stage method. The colour of the back panel will change colour and darken with age. I also replaced the seat cushion cover with new fabric and with the leftover fabric made a small cushion which is included in the sale for free. It has been waxed polished and will last many years to come. Floor to top of back 89cm. External width of arms 54cm. Internal width of arms at front 45cm. Height from top of arms to the floor 57cm. Seat width at front 45cm. Fabulous Retro design which will fit beautifully in the modern retro home. Perfect for the vintage, or contemporary home and an ideal addition to any interior. In excellent vintage condition with minimal age-related wear, but nothing unsightly. It is solid and sturdy and have been cleaned and polished ready for use. Traditional hole-to-hole chair caning is a well-known seatweaving technique, woven by hand one strand at a time, laced through a series of drilled holes in the frame, using a material called cane. This cane weaving material comes from the rattan palm and is imported from places like Malaysia, Asia, China, Africa and the Philippines. Chair cane is the skin or the bark of the rattan palm which is under a thorny surface. Cane has a natural glossy side that is the right-side-up or visible side, with a very porous wrong side. There are holes drilled through the frame of the chair on the outer perimeter that the strands of cane are woven or laced through. By the way, these drilled holes are the holes you will count when asking an expert to repair your chair seat. Generally speaking, the cost of repair is based on the amount of the holes times amount the expert charges. Traditional hole-to-hole or strand hand caning is woven with a variety of gauges of cane, all determined by the size of the holes drilled into the chair frame and the distance between holes. The traditional hand caning weave used is a very distinctive and common series of octagon holes in the pattern when completed. And although there are a number of various cane patterns and designs, this seven-step method has proved to be the most durable and longest-lasting of the various hole or lace caning patterns over several centuries. Avoid putting cane in hot dry sunny rooms or next to sources of heat. Low humidity will dry out the cane and make it brittle. Varnishing, painting or lacquering is not recommended as it seals the cane and doesnt not allow it to breathe or absorb moisture from the air. To restore moisture to Rattan you can safely wet it with a wet sponge, obviously avoid wetting wooden parts of the furniture. To prolong the life of a caned seat, tighten the cane periodically. Cane has a certain amount of stretch or sag, which allows for the additional stress of someone sitting. After some months of use, cane will begin to lose its memory and the sag will remain. When the cane can stretch no more, it will begin to wear against the edge of the chair or strands will break in the centre. By rewetting the cane with warm water and a sponge on the underside (non glossy side of the cane) and letting it dry slowly over night, you can restore its original tightness.
