In order to compete with the popularity of imported Scandinavian furniture at the time, G-Plan hired talented designers including Ib Kofod-Larsen from Denmark and the British Victor Bramwell Wilkins. Wilkins worked as an in-house designer for G-Plan for many years, and his designs reflected a strong Scandinavian influence. In the 1960s and 1970s G-Plan created an amazing selection of coffee tables and side tables. They were the largest producer of contemporary furniture in the UK over these decades, and came up with considerably more designs for occasional tables than any of their competitors. We estimate that they produced around forty different types of occasional table, some of which were available in two or three different sizes. 1968 G-Plan mainly produced designs with teak or tola (African mahogany) tops. In addition to this, they also offered around eight different nests of tables between the mid-1960s and early-1980s. It was the now iconic Astro designs by Victor Wilkins which started the real explosion of different models. These spectacular glass-topped models are today known as the Astro and Spider tables, respectively, and are highly prized by collectors. Somewhat confusingly, the table which we now refer to as the Spider was in fact originally called the Astro. The table that we now refer to as the Astro wasnt originally given a name at the time of production. The latter was available in circular and oval versions, and was also produced in a white finish. The G-Plan brand was a household name in the 1970s and the firms mix of good design, great build quality and reasonable, but far from cheap, prices made G-Plan a brand which many people aspired to own. Unlike other firms which over the years compromised on quality to keep demand steady, G plans high standards of quality of materials and workmanship, remained consistent and very reliable.
